IIT Hyderabad’s Nanofiber-Based Feminine Products
At the IInvenTive 2024 R&D fair, hosted by IIT Hyderabad, a remarkable innovation in the realm of feminine hygiene was showcased by the team from the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad. Led by Chandra Shekhar Sharma from the Department of Chemical Engineering, this breakthrough focuses on creating sustainable menstrual hygiene products using nanofiber technology.
This novel approach aims to replace the non-biodegradable superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) commonly used in sanitary napkins with a more environmentally friendly and health-conscious alternative: absorbent cellulose nanofibers. While SAPs are known for their high absorbency, they have raised concerns regarding potential negative health effects, such as skin irritation and toxic shock syndrome. The research team’s findings indicate that nanofiber cores not only match but surpass the safety and effectiveness of traditional SAPs.
A key feature of this innovation is the integration of essential oils into the nanofibers. This addition is intended to enhance the overall user experience by improving odor control and offering antibacterial protection. Nanofibers, characterized by their ultra-fine fibers and high surface area-to-volume ratio, present a viable alternative to SAPs, bringing qualitative advantages, including increased comfort and hygiene.
The technology developed by Sharma’s team represents a significant step forward in menstrual hygiene management. It aims to empower women by providing them with products that ensure comfort and safety during their menstrual cycle. This initiative is expected to have a profound societal impact, helping to eradicate stigmas associated with menstruation and improving the general well-being of women.
The widespread adoption of sanitary napkins made from nanofibers infused with essential oils could lead to a revolution in feminine hygiene products, offering a sustainable, comfortable, and safe option for women. The team’s dedication to enhancing women’s health and well-being while also considering environmental sustainability is a commendable effort in advancing menstrual hygiene management.
