Pregnant mothers in risk during Pandemic

A new study summarized in a research letter published in JAMA Pediatrics reveals that a number of factors, including negative impacts from the pandemic during pregnancy, health care experiences, and reports of discrimination, made it less likely that infants received their recommended vaccinations in the first months of their lives. Led by Heidi Preis, MSW, PhD, of Stony Brook University, the study serves as an indicator that a focus on vulnerable pregnant women, especially during a public health crisis, may help to promote infant vaccination.Read More...

Cause for secondary cancers identified

A new study by researchers at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center sheds light on how a critical protein, known as CUX1, plays a significant role as a gatekeeper for keeping t-MNs from developing. This research, led by the laboratory of Megan McNerney, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Pathology, could help scientists develop new methods for treating these secondary cancers, which are expected to increase in incidence as more and more patients survive initial bouts of cancer.Read More...

Early warning system model predicts deterioration of hospitalized cancer patients

About 9% of cancer patients experience complications while hospitalized that lead to a deterioration in their condition, a transfer to the intensive care unit or even death. A multi-disciplinary team of researchers at Washington University in St. Louis is developing a machine-learning-based early warning system model to predict this deterioration and improve patient outcomes.Read More...

Machine Learning Tools for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Crowdsourcing has become an increasingly popular way to develop machine learning algorithms to address many clinical problems in a variety of illnesses. Today at the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) annual meeting, a multicenter team led by an investigator from Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) presented the results from the RA2-DREAM Challenge, a crowdsourced effort focused on developing better methods to quantify joint damage in people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).Read More...

Resonance-tech enabled molecular mapping

Newswise — Flip through any chemistry textbook and you’ll see drawings of the chemical structure of molecules—where individual atoms are arranged in space and how they’re chemically bonded to each other. For decades, chemists could only indirectly determine chemical structures based on the response generated when samples interacted with x-rays or particles of light. For […]Read More...
