The IInvenTive 2024 R&D fair showcased a groundbreaking project from the School of Biochemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi, led by Prodyut Dhar and his team. The “AgroPro” project presents an innovative approach to converting agricultural waste into a range of sustainable, biodegradable products, offering a viable alternative to petroleum-derived materials.
This initiative aims to upcycle agro-residues, such as waste from rice, wheat, sugarcane, bamboo, and forest biomass, into high-value products with wide-ranging applications. The items developed under this project include drinking straws, heat and vacuum-sealable packaging films, transparent wood, sanitary and medicinal pads, technical textile threads, smart cooling homes, thermal insulation boxes, cups, aerogels, food-grade green tableware, crockery, and smart agriculture storage jute bags.
One of the key objectives of AgroPro is to provide sustainable solutions that can replace non-degradable plastic products, which are prevalent in daily life and contribute significantly to environmental pollution. The products developed by the IIT BHU team are not only eco-friendly but also cost-effective and scalable, making them suitable for widespread use.
The AgroPro project is particularly relevant in the context of India’s rural agrarian economy. By utilizing agricultural waste, the project not only addresses environmental concerns but also offers a potential economic boost to farmers and rural communities involved in the supply chain. This aspect of the project aligns with the broader goals of sustainable development and rural empowerment.
The indigenously developed products from AgroPro are a testament to the potential of innovative research in addressing critical environmental challenges while simultaneously supporting economic growth. This initiative by IIT BHU is a significant step towards achieving a more sustainable and circular economy, particularly in the context of India’s vast agricultural sector.
