A pioneering innovation in urban agriculture, known as FarmTech, was unveiled at the IInvenTive 2024 R&D fair by a team from the Indian Institute of Technology Bhilai, led by Ankita Awasthi, Astha Rangare, Roshni Kaushik, and guided by R. Jose Immanuel. FarmTech represents a significant advancement in the field of vertical farming, offering an efficient, space-saving, and automated solution for crop cultivation.
FarmTech is designed to cater to the needs of users who are looking for a manageable yet high-yield farming framework, especially suitable for indoor environments or areas with limited space. The system’s vertical structure is lightweight and incorporates integrated LED lights that provide the necessary energy for photosynthesis, ensuring optimal growth conditions for the crops.
A standout feature of FarmTech is its incorporation of an affordable and energy-efficient sensor network. This network is Wi-Fi enabled, allowing for the monitoring and communication of live data from the farm to an IoT platform. This real-time data collection and transmission facilitate precise control over the farming environment, optimizing conditions for crop growth and health.
Additionally, FarmTech includes an automated drip irrigation system, which is regulated based on data from soil moisture sensors. This system ensures efficient water usage, reducing waste and maintaining optimal soil conditions.
A critical component of this innovation is the FarmView mobile application, which allows users to remotely access live updates and alerts from the farm. This app utilizes data from Thingspeak, providing users with a comprehensive view of their farm’s status, including environmental conditions and crop health.
FarmTech’s approach to vertical farming is particularly relevant in urban settings, where space constraints often limit traditional farming methods. By providing a compact, automated, and efficient farming solution, FarmTech opens new avenues for sustainable urban agriculture. It offers city dwellers the opportunity to engage in farming, promoting local food production and reducing the carbon footprint associated with food transportation.
The IIT Bhilai team’s FarmTech is a notable contribution to sustainable agriculture, demonstrating how technology can be harnessed to create innovative solutions that address modern-day challenges in food production.
