The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has taken a significant step in enhancing India’s space capabilities by signing an agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the transfer of technology related to Small Satellite Launch Vehicles (SSLV). This event marks the 100th technology transfer agreement facilitated by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe).
ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan presided over the signing ceremony, which was attended by officials from ISRO, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), IN-SPACe, and HAL. Notably, HAL won the agreement by outbidding a consortium led by Adani Group-backed Alpha Design Technologies.
The agreement aims to complete the technology transfer process within the next 24 months. During this time, ISRO will provide necessary training and technical support to HAL, enabling them to understand and implement the SSLV technology.
“With India’s liberalization of the commercial space sector, opportunities are certainly growing,” said V. Narayanan. He emphasized that this collaboration is intended to prepare HAL for the next phase of space technology development in India.
Pawan Kumar Goenka, chairman of IN-SPACe, mentioned that this partnership reflects the Government of India’s vision to empower the space industry and establish India as a global hub for affordable and reliable satellite launch services. He expressed optimism that HAL will independently handle SSLV production and cater to both domestic and international markets.
D.K. Sunil, Chairman and Managing Director of HAL, stated that HAL will leverage its engineering and manufacturing strengths to develop SSLVs. He emphasized the goal of creating a self-reliant ecosystem in India, enabling regular and cost-competitive small-satellite launches for various customers around the world.
