Gas chromatography buyers evaluating throughput, flexibility and footprint together will find Scion Instruments’ four-model range at Smart Labtech’s booth built around exactly that trade-off — two standalone GC platforms and two GC-MS systems that scale from routine screening to demanding multi-residue or trace-level work.
The Model 8300 GC leads with a genuinely compact footprint — just 32 cm wide — paired with a fast-ramp oven capable of 170°C per minute, useful for labs running high sample volumes where oven cool-down time between injections becomes the real bottleneck. It carries a two-channel architecture supporting up to two injection ports and two detectors, including mass spectrometry detection, controlled through a 10-inch high-resolution touchscreen available in sixteen languages. Electronic flow control extends to three EFC modules at 0.001 psi resolution, and the platform accepts samplers, valves, valve ovens and backflush capability as the application demands.
The Model 8500 GC scales that same design philosophy up: a three-channel architecture supporting up to three injection ports and four detectors, a 150°C-per-minute ramp rate, and electronic flow control extended to nine EFC modules at the same 0.001 psi resolution. Scion describes it as offering “ultimate flexibility,” and the additional channel and detector capacity make the case directly — it is the platform for labs running multiple simultaneous methods or complex multi-detector configurations rather than a single routine assay.
On the mass spectrometry side, the Model 8700 SQ GC-MS is available with either EI or CI ionization, covers a mass range of 1 to 1,200 Da, scans up to 20,000 Da per second, and holds mass resolution between 0.7 and 4 Da with stability of 0.1 Da sustained over 48 hours — a figure that matters directly for any lab running long overnight batch sequences without manual recalibration. A high-performance turbo pump shortens time-to-vacuum, a dual-filament source extends uptime by allowing a filament swap without a full vacuum break, and Scion quotes an extended dynamic range beyond 10⁵.
The Model 8900 TQ GC-MS, Scion’s triple-quadrupole platform, pushes further: EI ionization, the same 1–1,200 Da mass range but a faster 30,000 Da-per-second scan rate, MRM acquisition speed of 1,000 transitions per second, and an extended dynamic range spanning six orders of magnitude — specifications aimed squarely at labs running quantitative multi-residue methods, such as pesticide or veterinary drug screening, where both sensitivity and acquisition speed determine how many analytes a single injection can reliably quantify.
Both GC and GC-MS platforms run on Scion’s CompassCDS software for method programming and control, and Smart Labtech will also carry the consumables layer that keeps any GC system running day to day — columns, filters, ferrules, septa, liners and vials — a detail worth noting for labs weighing total cost of ownership rather than instrument price alone.
