Recent groundbreaking research from Trinity College Dublin, in collaboration with the Tallaght Institute of Memory and Cognition and St James’s Hospital in Dublin, has introduced an innovative blood test that could revolutionize the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This new test, known as plasma p-tau217, demonstrates significant potential to supplant the invasive and often uncomfortable lumbar puncture (spinal tap) currently used to diagnose the disease.
The Challenge of Diagnosis
In Ireland, it is estimated that over 60,000 individuals are living with dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease accounting for nearly 70% of these cases. Alarmingly, up to half of those affected remain undiagnosed. This underdiagnosis emphasizes a pressing need for improved methods that can provide timely and accurate diagnoses.
Traditional diagnostic methods rely on biomarker measurement in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which necessitates a lumbar puncture that is invasive and presents certain risks. The research team aims to address these issues with a more accessible alternative.
A Promising Solution
The recent study published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment and Disease Monitoring investigate the effectiveness of the plasma p-tau217 blood test among patients exhibiting mild symptoms of Alzheimer’s. Conducted at Tallaght University Hospital, the study involved 148 patients who provided both blood and CSF samples during their diagnostic assessments. This allowed for a direct comparison between the new blood test and established CSF biomarkers.
Utilizing fully-automated technology known as Lumipulse®, the team found that measuring plasma p-tau217 achieved accuracy rates of over 90% compared to results from lumbar punctures. This significant finding indicates that the blood test could not only streamline the diagnostic process but also reduce the necessity for lengthy and uncomfortable procedures.
Implications for Patient Care
The findings of this research herald transformative potential for the future of Alzheimer’s diagnosis and treatment. By integrating the plasma p-tau217 test into clinical pathways, it is estimated that over half of the 150-200 lumbar punctures currently performed annually at the Tallaght Institute of Memory and Cognition could be avoided. Dr. Jean Dunne, Chief Medical Scientist at St James’s Hospital, highlighted that while the test is not yet available commercially in Ireland, the study supports its potential availability in the future.
Dr. Adam Dyer, a Specialist Registrar in Geriatric Medicine at Trinity College, emphasized that this research is a step forward in utilizing diagnostic blood tests to assist in the clinical-biological diagnosis of early Alzheimer’s disease. The use of a fully automated system also enhances reliability across various clinical laboratories.
