Recent research has shed light on a concerning, yet often overlooked, source of microplastic contamination: chewing gum. A study conducted by scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has found that a single piece of chewing gum can release up to 3,000 microplastic particles into the human body. This alarming revelation adds to the growing body of evidence linking everyday products to microplastic exposure.
The Findings of the Study
The researchers examined various brands of both synthetic and natural chewing gums to analyze the amount of microplastics released during chewing. The study revealed that, on average, 100 microplastics are released per gram of gum, with some brands releasing as many as 600 microplastics per gram. Given that a standard piece of gum usually weighs between 2 to 6 grams, the cumulative microplastic consumption from a single piece becomes significant.
Most of these plastics detach from the gum within the first two minutes of chewing, primarily due to friction. After eight minutes, approximately 94% of the total plastic particles were found to be released, resulting in significant ingestion during a typical chewing session.
Health Implications
The health implications of microplastic ingestion are still largely unknown. Although scientists have identified the types of plastics involved—such as polyolefins, polyethylene terephthalates, and polystyrenes—there remains no consensus on whether these microplastics pose a threat to human health. The effects observed in animal studies raise concerns, but comprehensive human trials have yet to be conducted.
Sanjay Mohanty, the study’s principal investigator, emphasizes that the goal of this research is not to alarm the public but rather to enhance awareness about microplastic exposure in daily life. While the public remains largely uninformed about the impact of microplastics, the study suggests a potential harm that warrants further investigation and consideration.
Reducing Exposure
In the interim, experts recommend strategies to minimize microplastic exposure, especially concerning chewing gum. One suggestion includes chewing a single piece for a longer duration instead of frequently switching between pieces, which could reduce the quantity of microplastics ingested.
Moreover, proper disposal methods for chewing gum are crucial. Improperly discarded gum contributes to environmental pollution, interfacing with larger issues of plastic waste management. By focusing on responsible disposal, individuals can mitigate not only their exposure but also their ecological footprint.
