Nursing Students Discover Their Calling at NIEPID
Manisha was a child of the digital age, a Gen Z who lived in a world of instant gratification and endless possibilities. Her days were a blur of social media, streaming platforms, and online gaming. But amidst the dazzling allure of the virtual world, a spark of compassion ignited within her. It was a flicker, a whisper against the cacophony of modern life, but it grew steadily.
Her parents, like many, envisioned a future for her steeped in the traditional paths to success. Engineering, with its promise of lucrative careers and societal prestige, was the obvious choice. But Manisha saw beyond the glittering facade. She saw the world as it truly was, a place of immense inequality and suffering. And in the heart of this young woman, a desire to heal, to care, and to make a difference began to take root.
Nursing, a profession often overlooked in the grand scheme of ambitions, became her calling. It was a decision that surprised many, but Manisha was resolute. She saw it as a noble pursuit, a chance to touch lives in the most profound way.
Nissy Lawrence is a product of the urban milieu, raised in the city of Kochi in Kerala. Her world was a blend of tradition and modernity, a dichotomy that shaped her into a complex individual. Brought up in a family valuing education and career, the path of least resistance would have been a pursuit in the realms of technology or business. But, inspired by her parental aunt, she opted for nursing.
Hailing from a background steeped in tradition, Maliha was a mirror of her culture’s values that Hyderabad Old city has been proud of. Respect, family, and community were the cornerstones of her upbringing. The expectations were clear – a life dedicated to family, marriage, and fulfilling societal roles. Yet, an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and a yearning to make a tangible difference in the world coexisted within her. A chance encounter with a documentary about healthcare disparities ignited a spark within Maliha.
The stark realities of the world, the suffering, and the lack of access to basic healthcare shook her to the core. It was in these vulnerable moments that she discovered a strength she never knew she possessed. Nursing became more than a profession; it was a mission, a way to bridge the gap between the privileged and the marginalized.
Nissy Lawrence, Maliha Sultan and Manisha became friends and classmates in KIMS Nursing College. They, along with their classmates, embarked on a clinical visit to National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID).
Experiencing NIEPID’s Holistic Care Approach
During their visit, the students were immersed in NIEPID’s dynamic therapy sessions, observing first-hand the specialized treatments provided to children with a range of conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome. The focus on early intervention, particularly for children aged zero to six, was a recurring theme, emphasizing the potential for positive outcomes through timely therapy.
“The therapies we observed, including the use of cerebral palsy chairs and targeted stimulation exercises, were enlightening,” shared Nissy Lawrence. “It’s clear that early intervention can prevent further complications and significantly enhance a child’s development.”
The students also visited the physiotherapy wing, where they learned about the importance of proper physical positioning to prevent joint displacement. “Seeing the practical side of what we’ve studied, such as the risks of the W sitting position, was incredibly valuable,” Maliha Sultan told NSH.
In the special education section, the focus was on educating parents rather than just the children. This method underscores the importance of family involvement in therapy. “Learning about the significance of fine motor skills and communication development was particularly impactful,” Manisha explained.
From Students to Caregivers
The visit profoundly affected the students, offering them a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by children with intellectual disabilities and the compassionate care they require. In NIEPID, a world away from the noise and distractions of their generation, they found their purpose. Surrounded by children with special needs, they witnessed the power of human spirit in its purest form. Their laughter, their struggles, their triumphs – it all touched them deeply. The children at NIEPID were not defined by their disabilities; they were individuals with dreams, hopes, and aspirations.
“This experience has been eye-opening. Understanding the individuality of each child, like unique fingerprints, really resonated with us,” Maliha said.
“We’ve seen the dedication required to care for these special children,” Nissy added. “It’s not just about addressing disabilities; it’s about fostering their unique abilities and potentials.”
The visit to NIEPID was more than just an educational trip; it was a life-changing experience that inspired a group of young nursing students to look beyond the conventional and embrace the role of compassionate caregivers. They realized that their chosen path was not just a career, but a vocation.
The experience at NIEPID was a crucible for all the students of KIMS Nursing College. It tested their limits, stretched their empathy, and ignited a fire within them that would burn brightly for years to come. They saw first-hand the challenges faced by these children and their families, and they were determined to be a part of the solution.
