India is set to launch a groundbreaking aerospace project, developing its first jet engine completely on its own. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has teamed up with the French company Safran to create a powerful fighter jet engine. This collaboration will ensure that India owns all the technology and knowledge necessary to produce and improve the engine without relying on foreign suppliers.
The new jet engine is designed to produce an initial thrust of 120 kilo-Newtons (KN) and can be increased to 140 KN. It is intended for next-generation aircraft, including the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and aircraft for the Indian Navy. Both of these platforms require high-performance engines to enhance their capabilities.
This project marks a significant leap for India’s defense technology. For the first time, foreign partners are transferring 100% of the engine technology to India. This includes advanced features like single-crystal turbine blades, which improve efficiency and durability.
India has previously developed jet engines, but this collaboration allows for a complete transfer of technology, giving the country full control over its aviation requirements. This is a notable shift from earlier arrangements, where India had limited access to crucial information from American suppliers.
Developing an indigenous engine has important strategic implications for India. It reduces the country’s dependency on imports for military aviation and enhances its position among major global powers. Currently, only a few countries, including the U.S., Russia, the UK, and France, have the capability to produce indigenous jet engines. By mastering this technology, India aims to solidify its status in the global defense landscape.
The new engine will not only boost India’s military capabilities but also have economic benefits. Expertise developed in military jet engines can apply to civilian aircraft and other industries, potentially creating jobs and encouraging private sector involvement.
Entities like Tata Advanced Systems, Larsen & Toubro, and Adani Defence are expected to play a role in manufacturing and assembling the engine. This collaboration aims to build a robust domestic supply chain.
