In a heartwarming medical success story, a 9-month-old baby girl named Lavanya, who suffered from profound hearing loss, has undergone a successful cochlear implant surgery at Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad. Lavanya, born to Indian-origin parents Diveka Dhanraj and Satish Sakishnu, resided in Guyana until she visited India for treatment.
Lavanya’s medical journey started when her profound hearing loss was detected, hindering her ability to develop speech or respond to auditory stimuli. Further examination revealed complications such as cochlear hypoplasia and an anomalous cochlea on her left side. Understanding the dire need for treatment, Lavanya’s family sought options in neighbouring countries like Brazil and Venezuela, as well as the United States and Canada. However, financial constraints posed significant challenges, making the prospects of affordable treatment in those countries unattainable.
The turning point came when the Sri Sathya Sai organization in Guyana reached out for assistance. They facilitated Lavanya’s connection to Apollo Hospitals, where an expert team was assembled to perform the surgery. Dr. E C Vinay Kumar, Head of ENT at Apollo Hospitals, led the surgical team along with senior ENT surgeons Dr. K Rambabu, Dr. Jaswinder Singh Saluja, and implantation audiologist Dr. I Srikanth. The surgery, conducted on May 17, has now placed Lavanya on the path to hearing and speech recovery.
Dr. Vinay Kumar emphasized the complexity of the procedure, citing the unique challenges presented by Lavanya’s condition. As of now, the baby is recovering well and beginning her auditory journey, which is expected to significantly enhance her quality of life and developmental milestones.
This case highlights the remarkable impact of international collaboration and support in healthcare, particularly for families who lack financial resources for critical medical procedures. The involvement of organizations like the Society to Aid the Hearing Impaired (SAHI) and the Sri Sathya Sai organization demonstrates the importance of community support in facilitating life-changing medical interventions.
