IIT Jodhpur’s Innovative DigiSculpt
In an innovative development, researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur, in collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Jodhpur, have introduced DigiSculpt, a digitally designed maxillofacial prosthesis. Led by Varun Khandelwal, Hardik Kothadia, and Divesh Kumar Awasthi, this innovation addresses the challenges faced in conventional methods of designing and fabricating maxillofacial prostheses.
Maxillofacial prostheses play a crucial role in restoring missing facial and body tissues resulting from congenital malformations, diseases, surgeries, cancer resections, or trauma. The proposed innovation brings unique features to the field:
1. Digital Recording: Utilizing digital technology for accurate recording of facial defects.
2. AI-Assisted CAD Designing: Incorporating artificial intelligence to assist in the computer-aided design of facial defects.
3. Complex Prosthetic Designs: Allowing for intricate designs and multi-material fabrication.
4. Accurate Shade Matching: Ensuring precise color matching to resemble natural tissues.
The societal impact of DigiSculpt is substantial, considering the significant number of patients in India losing facial parts annually. Trauma and cancer surgeries often lead to such facial defects, requiring lifelong prosthetic rehabilitation. The conventional prosthetic fabrication process is time-consuming, traumatic for patients, and may not always yield optimal results.
DigiSculpt aims to reduce both the cost and time of prosthetic rehabilitation by 50%, thereby creating a profound societal impact. Beyond the physical aspect, this technology contributes to restoring the confidence of individuals with facial defects, enhancing their daily activities and social lives. This innovation marks a paradigm shift in maxillofacial prosthetics, emphasizing the role of digital advancements in improving patient outcomes and overall well-being.
