As Ganesh Chaturthi approaches, devotees in Hyderabad are getting ready to welcome Lord Ganesha into their homes. A big question on everyone’s mind is which type of Ganesh idol to choose: clay or Plaster of Paris (POP). Each option has its own unique qualities and impact on the environment.
Clay Ganesh idols are often handmade by skilled artisans and represent tradition and sustainability. Made from local soil, these idols are biodegradable. When immersed in water as part of the final prayers, clay idols dissolve back into nature, benefiting local ecosystems instead of harming them. This eco-friendly aspect is catching the attention of more and more people who want to celebrate without harming the environment. There are many reasons to choose clay idols. They break down naturally without leaving harmful waste behind, making them safe for rivers and lakes. Many artisans use natural colors from flowers and dyes, ensuring the immersion process doesn’t pollute water bodies. Buying clay idols helps keep traditional crafts alive and strengthens community bonds.

In contrast, POP idols are non-biodegradable. When these idols are immersed, they don’t dissolve and can cause pollution, potentially blocking waterways and harming aquatic life. Additionally, many POP idols are painted with artificial colors that can leak toxic chemicals into the water, posing health risks for both marine life and humans. As more people learn about these issues, many are choosing to celebrate in a more sustainable way. Workshops and campaigns are being organized to raise awareness about the benefits of clay idols.
To support this initiative, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is distributing free clay Ganesh idols. Venkatesham, an official with HMDA, said that they are giving away 8-inch clay idols at 34 locations across the city, with a total of 100,000 idols planned for distribution. One of the distribution spots is the Balkampet Yellamma Temple, where 500 idols were handed out yesterday, and another 500 idols are being given away today.
This Ganesh Chaturthi, as devotees prepare to honor Lord Ganesha, the choice between clay and POP idols has become more than just a personal decision; it’s a chance to make a positive impact on the environment.
