The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across Telangana this week, offering much-needed respite from the ongoing heatwave that has scorched the state with temperatures crossing 45°C in several districts.
The prediction comes as a boon for residents enduring prolonged dry heat. IMD officials expect moderate to heavy showers from May 5 to 8, with Hyderabad likely to see 20-40 mm of rain. Day temperatures are projected to dip by 4-6°C, easing the strain on power grids and water resources.
Heatwave Toll Eases
Telangana has grappled with severe heat since mid-April. Districts like Nalgonda, Khammam, and Warangal recorded peaks of 47°C, leading to over 15 heatstroke deaths and hundreds of hospital admissions. “The heatwave has disrupted daily life, agriculture, and small businesses,” said Dr. M. Srinivas, Director of Health Services.
Farmers, hit hardest, welcome the change. “Monsoon onset will save our summer crops and recharge groundwater,” noted K. Rama Rao, president of Telangana Rythu Sangham.
IMD’s Detailed Forecast
The IMD attributes the shift to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. Thunderstorms with gusty winds up to 40 kmph are expected in northern and central districts. Hyderabad may experience cloudy skies turning rainy by Tuesday evening.
Key Weather Alerts
• Rainfall: 20-60 mm in most districts
• Temperature: Highs drop to 38-40°C
• Districts: Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medak most affected
• Validity: May 5-8
Yellow alerts have been issued for 15 districts. The state disaster management authority urges caution against waterlogging and lightning.
Public, Official Reactions
Relief is palpable among citizens. “Finally, some cool air after weeks of oven-like heat,” said IT professional Priya Sharma from Gachibowli. Power demand, which touched 15,000 MW last week, should stabilise post-rains, said TS Transco officials.
Meteorologist S. Lakshmi from IMD Hyderabad added, “This early monsoon activity signals a normal southwest season ahead, vital for kharif sowing.”
Preparing for Rains
Authorities have ramped up urban drainage checks in Hyderabad and Secunderabad. NDRF teams remain on standby. Farmers are advised to protect standing crops from sudden winds.
The forecast underscores Telangana’s vulnerability to extreme weather amid climate shifts. As rains arrive, the state hopes for sustained relief, bolstering summer resilience and agricultural recovery.
