In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become an unwelcome yet pervasive companion. While often viewed as a mental burden, its impact runs far deeper, significantly affecting our nervous system and overall well-being. British psychiatrist Owen O’Kane sheds light on this intricate relationship, revealing how chronic stress can lead to an overreactive nervous system, often manifesting as agitation and a profound loss of restful states.

The core issue, as O’Kane explains, lies in the nervous system’s default response to perceived threats – the “fight or flight” mechanism. When we experience stress, even from anxious thoughts or modern-day pressures, this system can become chronically activated. This constant state of alert prevents the body from entering restorative modes, leading to a cascade of physical and emotional symptoms.

Fortunately, regaining control and soothing an overstimulated nervous system is achievable. The key lies in sending deliberate signals of safety to the body, allowing it to downregulate its stress response. O’Kane suggests several practical strategies:

  • Grounding in the Present: Actively focus on your immediate surroundings. This can involve noticing your breath, feeling your feet on the ground, or observing the details of the environment around you. These simple acts pull the mind away from anxious rumination and anchor it in the present moment.
  • Acknowledging Anxiety: Instead of fighting or suppressing anxious feelings, try acknowledging their presence. This non-judgmental approach can paradoxically reduce their power over you.
  • Slowing Down: When stressed, our bodies naturally speed up. Consciously slowing down physical responses – such as our breathing or movements – can signal to the nervous system that there is no immediate danger.
  • Creating Safe Moments: Intentionally carving out small pockets of time dedicated to peace and calm can act as crucial resets for an overwrought system.

The goal is not to eliminate anxiety entirely, as it is a natural human emotion. Instead, the focus is on helping the body and mind feel safe enough to regulate their responses, thereby mitigating the debilitating effects of chronic stress. By implementing these techniques, individuals can begin to calm their nervous system and reclaim a sense of equilibrium.
