Cough syrups are commonly used to treat various ailments, particularly respiratory issues like coughs and colds. However, experts are raising concerns about their proper use, especially once opened. Recent discussions among healthcare professionals highlight critical guidelines regarding the shelf life of opened cough syrups and the potential health risks associated with their misuse.
Cough syrups can be used for various medical conditions beyond just cough relief, such as managing colds, allergies, or even gastrointestinal issues. They often contain active ingredients meant to alleviate symptoms, but their effectiveness can diminish over time, especially after the bottle is opened.
According to Dr. Saurabh Kapoor, a paediatrician, once a cough syrup bottle is opened, it should not be used beyond one month. “The potency goes down, and it is advisable to discard it after this period. Do not rely on the expiry date printed on the bottle; once opened, different rules apply,” he explains.
Risks of Using Opened Cough Syrups
1. Decreased Effectiveness: Over time, the active ingredients in syrup can break down, resulting in a product that may not provide the desired relief. This can lead individuals to consume larger quantities, mistakenly thinking it will enhance its effectiveness.
2. Contamination Concerns: Dr. Shrey Srivastav, a consultant physician, points out that exposure to air and bacteria can lead to microbial growth. “Opened syrups are at risk of contamination, which can potentially lead to gastrointestinal issues or infections,” he warns.
3. Harmful Byproducts: As the components break down, they may create harmful byproducts. Therefore, consumption of damaged or contaminated syrups can pose additional health risks.
4. Visual Changes: It is essential to check for any changes in taste, colour, or the presence of mold inside the bottle. If any changes are identified, the syrup should be discarded immediately.
Guidelines for Safe Use
Healthcare experts stress the importance of not self-medicating with any medication without a doctor’s advice. Cough syrups, in particular, should always be consumed according to a healthcare professional’s prescription. The dangers of improper use extend not only to potential health complications but also to interactions with other medications.
