Asthma, a chronic respiratory condition characterized by inflamed airways, is becoming increasingly prevalent in urban areas of Telangana, particularly among children. Recent estimates indicate that over 18 lakh (1.8 million) people in the state are living with asthma, a significant public health issue that demands urgent attention from medical professionals, policymakers, and the community.
The alarming increase in asthma cases has been highlighted by healthcare professionals across Telangana. In areas like Hyderabad, Warangal, and Karimnagar, doctors report a noticeable surge in asthma diagnoses, especially among children and women, who are identified as the most vulnerable populations. According to Subhakar Nadella, a consultant pulmonologist at KIMS Hospitals, it is estimated that between 5 to 15 out of every 100 children less than 11 years of age suffer from asthma in India.
Several factors contribute to the rising prevalence of asthma in urban settings:
1. Environmental Pollution: Poor air quality, exacerbated by vehicular emissions and industrial activities, plays a critical role in the worsening of asthma symptoms.
2. Construction Dust: Ongoing urban development leads to increased exposure to dust and particulate matter, which can trigger asthma attacks.
3. Pollen and Allergens: Landscaping that incorporates pollen-heavy plants may also contribute to allergic reactions in susceptible individuals.
4. Urbanization: Rapid urbanization has led to lifestyle changes and exposure to a greater number of environmental pollutants, heightening asthma risk.
Chandrakant Tarke, a senior pulmonologist at Apollo Hospitals, emphasizes that addressing these environmental concerns is crucial for managing asthma more effectively.
Asthma is often misunderstood as a mere seasonal allergy, leading to inadequate treatment and management strategies. Many individuals still believe that the use of inhalers signifies weakness or dependency, though, in reality, inhalers are proven to be both safe and effective for managing asthma. Dr. Chandrakant Tarke emphasizes that asthma requires consistent management rather than just temporary relief measures.
In response to the rising asthma cases, healthcare providers in Telangana are implementing innovative care strategies. Hospitals like Medicover are offering individualized asthma care plans, enhanced digital follow-ups, and community awareness programs. These initiatives aim to reduce emergency visits and school absenteeism among children suffering from asthma.
Dr. Raghukanth, a senior pulmonologist at Medicover, notes the success of their preventive approach, emphasizing the importance of education and dispelling cultural stigmas surrounding asthma treatment.
