Business Sweden’s Focus Asia initiative launches comprehensive study trip targeting pharmaceutical and sustainable manufacturing opportunities
Swedish small and medium enterprises (SMEs) prepared for a strategic market entry into India through a government-backed trade mission scheduled for September 15-18, 2025. The Focus Asia SME Study-trip, started on Monday- organized by Business Sweden, represents a concentrated effort to unlock Swedish business potential in one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies.
The four-day program will span Delhi and Mumbai, targeting Swedish companies with fewer than 250 employees and annual turnover under EUR 50 million. With India’s GDP reaching $3.567 trillion and maintaining a robust 6.5% growth rate, the initiative comes at a time when bilateral trade between Sweden and India shows significant potential for expansion.
Strategic Focus Areas and Market Dynamics
The study trip will concentrate on three key sectors where Swedish expertise aligns with Indian market demands: sustainable manufacturing and green technology, renewable energy generation, and local sourcing opportunities. These focus areas reflect India’s evolving regulatory landscape, particularly government policies favouring sustainable manufacturing and renewable energy adoption.
Sofia Hogman, Sweden’s Trade and Invest Commissioner to India and South Asia, emphasizes the strategic timing of the initiative. “India is becoming a natural and stable partner to Swedish companies who are looking at expanding their footprint,” she notes, highlighting favorable government policies that are increasing demand for Swedish companies in sustainable manufacturing and renewable energy sectors.
Current trade statistics reveal a positive balance for Sweden, with imports from Sweden totaling $1.62 billion compared to $1.14 billion in exports to Sweden. Approximately 300 Swedish companies already operate in India, providing a foundation for new market entrants to build upon.
Comprehensive Program Structure
The delegation program features a carefully structured itinerary designed to maximize business development opportunities. Key components include:
Delhi Phase (Days 1-2): Market orientation sessions led by Business Sweden, networking events with leading Indian companies, and theme-based workshops focusing on sourcing and manufacturing with industry bodies and member companies.
Mumbai Phase (Days 3-4): Industry workshops with major Indian conglomerates including Tata, Reliance, Godrej, and Aditya Birla, specifically targeting sustainable manufacturing and renewable energy sectors.
The program includes site visits to existing Swedish companies, providing participants with practical insights into operational challenges and success strategies in the Indian market.
Government Support and Follow-up Services
The Focus Asia initiative represents part of Sweden’s broader governmental strategy to increase Swedish companies’ export share and presence in Asia and Oceania. The program extends beyond the initial visit, offering participants up to 16 hours of consulting support through Business Sweden’s Export Validation services for deeper market analysis.
Post-delegation support includes business opportunity realization assistance and continued individual support based on outcomes achieved during the visit. This comprehensive approach reflects the Swedish government’s commitment to sustainable business expansion in the Asia-Pacific region.
Investment and Participation Structure
The program is priced at 15,000 SEK per company for one representative, with additional participants costing 5,000 SEK each. While the participation fee covers program activities, participants bear responsibility for transportation, accommodation, and meals, with estimated additional costs of approximately 12,000 SEK per person for the five-day period.
The pricing structure reflects the program’s focus on SMEs, making it accessible while ensuring serious commitment from participating companies. Business Sweden will handle logistics coordination for transportation and hotel bookings within India, streamlining the experience for participants.
Market Entry Implications
For pharmaceutical and healthcare companies, India’s position as a global manufacturing hub presents significant opportunities. The country’s Information Technology, Industrial manufacturing, Healthcare, and Renewable energy sectors offer diverse entry points for Swedish companies with relevant expertise.
The study trip’s emphasis on sustainable manufacturing aligns with India’s increasing focus on environmental regulations and green technology adoption. Swedish companies with expertise in clean technology, renewable energy systems, and sustainable manufacturing processes are well-positioned to capitalize on these emerging opportunities.
The timing of the initiative, coinciding with India’s continued economic growth and policy shifts toward sustainability, suggests strong potential for meaningful business relationships to develop from the delegation.
