Sustainability – Turning Dung into Gold

In a world confronting climate extremes and resource scarcity, India’s dairy sector is undergoing a green metamorphosis—powered not by imported technology, but by what was once dismissed as rural waste. From cow dung-based biogas to water-smart dairying and biodegradable packaging, the country’s milk economy is embracing a circular, regenerative model that could redefine global sustainability benchmarks.

Cow Dung to Biogas: The NDDB Model of Circular Wealth

At the heart of this transition lies cow dung—long considered a byproduct, now rebranded as a bio-resource of national value.

The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) is spearheading an ambitious program to transform bovine waste into Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) and organic fertilizer, closing the loop on dairy economics.

  • Over 250 district dairy cooperatives across 15 states have committed to adopt NDDB’s scalable biogas plant models, such as those piloted in Zakariyapura (Gujarat), Banaskantha, and Varanasi.
  • These plants generate bio-CNG for dairy operations, while the slurry is processed into certified organic manure, reducing farmers’ reliance on chemical fertilizers.
  • The initiative ensures economic co-benefits for farmers, improves hygiene, reduces methane emissions, and aligns with India’s Panchamrit climate goals.

By 2026, NDDB targets a pan-India dung-to-gas infrastructure, setting a global precedent for climate-smart dairy farming.

Water-Wise Dairying: Addressing the 850L Crisis

Producing one litre of milk consumes 850 litres of water, according to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI). In a country where 70% of extracted groundwater is already consumed by agriculture and livestock, this statistic is more than sobering—it is urgent.

To address this, India’s dairy sector is adopting water stewardship practices that go beyond token conservation:

  • Precision irrigation systems powered by satellite farm management tools are being deployed for fodder crop cultivation.
  • Constructed wetlands near dairy farms serve as natural filters for wastewater, protecting downstream ecosystems.
  • On-farm water recycling systems are capturing rainwater and reusing cleaning water, especially in large processing units.

NDDB estimates that these combined practices could cut water usage per litre of milk by up to 30% by 2025, positioning India as a leader in water-conscious dairying.

Packaging Revolution: From Plastic to Plant

With over 75% of urban milk sold in LDPE plastic pouches, the Indian dairy industry has long faced criticism for its plastic footprint. However, change is underway—led by a quiet but powerful innovation from Karnataka.

Bamul (Bangalore Milk Union Ltd), under the Nandini brand, has launched India’s first biodegradable milk packaging, made entirely from corn starch.

  • These eco-pouches decompose naturally within 180 days, compared to 500+ years for conventional polythene.
  • The material is compostable and can be converted into organic fertilizer, creating a zero-waste lifecycle.
  • While currently rolled out as a pilot program, Bamul aims to scale the innovation to other milk unions, contingent on cost-efficiency and consumer acceptance.

This initiative signals a shift from sustainability as CSR to sustainability as core operational strategy, with the potential to influence policy and procurement standards across India’s FMCG and dairy sectors.

Milking Sustainability, One Step at a Time

India’s dairy ecosystem is redefining sustainability—not through imported templates, but by harnessing indigenous resources, rural wisdom, and modern science. Whether it’s extracting green fuel from dung, conserving water in the fields, or reinventing the milk pouch, the transformation is profound and pragmatic.

As the sector matures, the question is no longer “Can dairy be sustainable?” but rather “How quickly can we scale what already works?”

India’s answer, it seems, is unfolding one bio-digester, drip line, and biodegradable pouch at a time.
