The study, published on Tuesday, revealed that this protein has remarkable antibacterial properties. It not only kills harmful bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes—which cause pneumonia and strep throat, respectively—but also boosts the potency of antibiotics. In laboratory tests, the protein made antibiotics up to 32 times more effective at eliminating dangerous pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
What makes this discovery even more promising is that the oyster protein is non-toxic to human cells, paving the way for the development of a safe and effective antibiotic derived from natural marine sources. With antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) superbugs posing a global health crisis, this finding comes as a beacon of hope. Dr. Kirsten Benkendorff, one of the study’s co-authors, described the discovery as a significant opportunity for collaboration between researchers, aquaculture experts, and the pharmaceutical industry. She emphasized that the oyster’s natural defenses could inspire the creation of innovative treatments to address the rising threat of antibiotic resistance.
