A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) has revealed an interesting finding: soil properties have a greater impact than plant genetics on the microbiome of red gram plants. This research, led by Professor Appa Rao Podile, focused on understanding how various factors affect the microbial diversity found in the nodules of red gram roots.
The team examined several red gram varieties, including Asha, Durga, and Mannem Konda Kandi, which were grown in different types of soil: Alfisol, Vertisol, and Inceptisol. They also studied a wild relative of red gram in its native soil, providing a comprehensive comparison.
One of the key findings of the study was the significant role that soil properties play in shaping the nodule microbiome of red gram plants. According to the researchers, factors such as the type of soil and the specific location of the nodule on the root influenced the composition of the microbial community more than the plant’s genetic makeup.
While the microbiome diversity within the nodules was lower compared to that of the surrounding soil, it was found to be more specialized. This suggests that the host plant has a role in determining which microbes are present in the nodules. Professor Podile and his team explained that “although the diversity of microbiome in the nodule is less compared to bulk soil, it is more specialized, indicating the role of host selection.”
This research highlights the importance of understanding soil health in agricultural practices. It suggests that improving soil quality could be crucial for better plant health and productivity. The findings of this study have been published in “Environmental Microbiome,” a respected journal by Springer Nature, emphasizing the significance of the research in the field of agricultural science.
