Mission Aagaman, targeted for launch between July 12 and August 4 from Sriharikota, will attempt to put India’s first privately built orbital-class rocket into low Earth orbit — a milestone nearly four years in the making
Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace is preparing to write a new chapter in India’s space story. The company has announced the opening of its launch window for Vikram-1, India’s first privately developed orbital-class launch vehicle, with lift-off targeted for no earlier than July 12, and a window extending until August 4, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
The mission carries a name befitting the occasion: Aagaman, meaning “the arrival” — a nod to what would be the arrival of India’s private sector into orbital spaceflight, a domain long dominated exclusively by ISRO.
From Suborbital Proof-of-Concept to Orbital Ambition
This isn’t Skyroot’s first trip off the ground. Back in November 2022, the company’s smaller Vikram-S rocket became the first privately developed Indian rocket to reach space, albeit on a brief suborbital hop. Vikram-1 is a considerably bigger leap — literally and figuratively.
Standing roughly seven storeys tall, Vikram-1 is a multi-stage rocket built almost entirely from all-carbon composite materials, a choice that shaves off significant weight compared to traditional metallic rocket bodies. Its propulsion system is equally ambitious, combining in-house-developed, 3D-printed rocket engines with high-thrust solid-fuel boosters — a hybrid approach that reflects the broader shift in the New Space era toward faster, cheaper manufacturing techniques like additive manufacturing.
The rocket is designed to loft small satellites weighing up to 350 kilograms into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). For its maiden flight, Vikram-1 will target a 450 km altitude orbit at a 60-degree inclination — a fairly standard orbital slot for the growing global market of small-satellite operators, from Earth-observation startups to communications constellations.
Why This Flight Matters More Than the Payload
Unlike a typical commercial launch, Mission Aagaman’s primary objective isn’t necessarily deploying a specific satellite — it’s about data. As Skyroot co-founder and CEO Pawan Kumar Chandana put it, the goal is to capture real, in-flight performance data across every subsystem of the rocket, from the moment of lift-off through every phase of ascent, stage separation, and orbital insertion.
That distinction matters enormously in aerospace engineering. Ground testing — static fires, vibration tests, thermal-vacuum chambers — can validate individual components in isolation, but it can never fully replicate the combined stresses of an actual flight: the aerodynamic loads during ascent, the precise timing of stage separations, or how guidance and navigation systems perform under real orbital mechanics. This is precisely why Chandana has described the mission as being as much about learning as it is about delivering a payload.
All stages of Vikram-1 have reportedly already been integrated and stacked at the launch pad, with the current window subject to final assembly checks, weather conditions, and range safety clearances — standard pre-launch contingencies for any orbital mission.
A Milestone for India’s Growing Private Space Sector
Skyroot’s push toward orbit arrives at a pivotal moment for India’s commercial space industry. Since the sector was opened up to private players in 2020 — with regulatory oversight from IN-SPACe — a wave of startups has emerged aiming to build everything from launch vehicles to satellite constellations. Skyroot itself became one of the sector’s standout successes, achieving unicorn status after raising $60 million in funding.
A successful orbital flight would position Skyroot among a small handful of companies worldwide that have taken a privately developed rocket from the drawing board to orbit — a club that, globally, includes the likes of SpaceX and Rocket Lab, though those companies operate at a very different scale and cadence.
Company co-founder and COO Naga Bharath Daka framed the mission as the product of a broader ecosystem effort, crediting collaboration with the Central Government, IN-SPACe, ISRO, investors, and customers for making the milestone possible.
What Comes Next
Notably, Skyroot has been candid that Vikram-1’s debut flight is only partially commercial in nature. The company has indicated it plans to transition to full commercial operations only after one or two successful demonstration flights to orbit — a cautious, stepwise approach common among launch vehicle developers, where early flights are treated as much as engineering validation exercises as revenue-generating missions.
If Mission Aagaman succeeds, it would mark a significant proof point not just for Skyroot, but for India’s broader ambition to become a serious global player in the commercial small-satellite launch market — one increasingly shaped by the demand for frequent, low-cost, dedicated rides to orbit.
All eyes will now be on Sriharikota as the window opens on July 12.
