In a groundbreaking development, Waterfly Technologies, a startup nurtured at IIT Madras, is set to revolutionize coastal transportation with its innovative electric seagliders. With reference to Hyperloop by IIT Madras this new transport solution utilizes advanced aerodynamic principles to deliver high-speed travel while maintaining eco-friendliness and affordability.
Design and Technology
The seagliders, also known as Wing-in-Ground (WIG) craft, feature a sleek design that leverages the ground effect to fly efficiently at altitudes of approximately four meters. This design not only enhances aerodynamic performance but also allows them to take off and land on waterways – a significant advantage for coastal transport. Waterfly’s seagliders are expected to reach speeds of up to 500 km/h, merging the comfort of flying with the practicality of water-based travel.
Economic and Environmental Impact
Waterfly Technologies aims to make coastal travel cheaper and more accessible. The estimated cost of a trip from Kolkata to Chennai on a seaglider is only Rs 600, making it more economical than the current AC three-tier train fare, which is over Rs 1,500. This pricing strategy is designed to attract a large segment of passengers who seek cost-effective travel options.
From an environmental perspective, the seagliders run on battery power initially, offering about a 500 km range, with plans for a hydrogen-electric variant that can span 2,000 km. This approach significantly lowers the carbon footprint compared to conventional air travel, attracting interest from various sectors looking to reduce emissions.
Safety Features and Military Applications
Safety is a key consideration in the design of these seagliders. Unlike traditional aircraft, which require runways, seagliders can land safely on water in emergencies, providing an added layer of security for passengers. The potential military applications of this technology are also being explored, with Waterfly in discussions with India’s GRSE shipbuilders for purposes such as cargo transport and surveillance.
Future Prospects and Development Timeline
Waterfly Technologies is currently in the process of developing a series of prototypes, with a 100 kg model expected by April 2025, followed by a one-tonne version later in the year. A full-scale model capable of carrying 20 passengers is slated for production by 2026. The startup aims for certification from the Indian Register of Shipping in the next few years, which will pave the way for both civilian and military usage.
Additionally, the company has ambitious plans for future routes, including international travel from Chennai to Singapore and even a transcontinental journey from Dubai to Los Angeles by 2029.
