Red-crested Pochard

In a exciting event for nature lovers, the Red-crested Pochard, a migratory duck, has been spotted in Telangana’s Mancherial district. This is the first time the bird has been recorded in the area, bringing joy to forest officials and environmentalists.

The bird was seen at an irrigation tank in Venkatraopet village during a recent bird-watching event. District Forest Officer Shiv Aasheesh Singh said this sighting is a positive sign for the local ecology, indicating that the environment is welcoming for such species.

About the Red-Crested Pochard

The Red-crested Pochard is part of a group of birds known as pochards. These ducks are recognized for their round bodies and larger heads. They are known as diving ducks, meaning they can dive underwater to look for food, which mainly consists of aquatic plants. Pochards typically live in freshwater lakes and pools, often near reeds.

These birds migrate between their breeding spots and winter habitats, traveling long distances. The sighting in Telangana is particularly significant because it shows the potential for the area to support diverse bird species.

Birds and Community Engagement

The spotting of the Red-crested Pochard has attracted many nature enthusiasts, including students from the Forest College and Research Institute of Mulugu, wildlife photographers, and officials from the Forest Department. They came together for the two-day Kawal Bird Festival, celebrating avian life and capturing images of various birds at the tank.

Organizers are also taking steps to ensure that conditions remain safe and suitable for these birds, which is vital for their survival and the health of the ecosystem.
