India’s first domestically created CAR T-cell therapy was introduced by President Droupadi Murmu, who hailed the development as a significant advancement that offers “new hope for humankind” in the fight against the illness. According to a senior official, gene-based treatment, developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and Tata Memorial Centre, is being introduced in India at a cost that is around 10% of what it costs outside.
Speaking at the therapy’s debut event at IIT Bombay, Murmu cited the therapy’s indigenous creation as an illustration of the Made in India campaign. Through laboratory modification, a patient’s T cells—a subset of immune system cells—is used in a CAR T-cell treatment to target and eliminate cancer cells. The nation’s first “Made in India” CAR T-cell therapy, called “NexCAR19 CAR T-cell therapy,” is anticipated to drastically reduce treatment costs. The president stated in her address that this therapy is regarded as a fantastic advancement in the medical sciences.
“The development of this therapy is also an example of the ‘Make in India‘ initiative and speaks volumes about Indian scientists and physicians,” she stated.
“The introduction of the first gene treatment in India represents a significant advance in the fight against cancer. CAR T-cell therapy represents a new hope for humanity as a whole since it is an accessible and cost-effective therapeutic option, according to Murmu. The majority of patients cannot afford the prohibitively costly CAR T-cell treatment, according to Sudeep Gupta, director of the Tata Memorial Centre.
Despite the fact that NexCar19 must be specially made for each patient under the strictest guidelines, he said that it has been released for around tenth of the cost of what it costs outside of India. According to Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, director of IIT Bombay, the cost of therapy overseas is about Rs. 4 crore, compared to Rs. 30 lakh in India. According to him, the availability of low-cost CAR T-cell treatment is a major victory for the nation and cancer patients, solidifying India’s position as a leader in gene and cell therapy worldwide.
“Just like Chandrayaan-3 that launched India’s entry into elite space club, the CAR-T cell therapy heralds India’s entry into the cell and genetic engineering group,” said Chaudhuri. According to Gupta, the medication’s introduction marks a turning point in the fields of genetic engineering and cancer treatment, helping about 20,000 Indians annually. “This therapy has a wide range of practical applications in addition to being a top-notch scientific discovery. He declared, “NexCAR19 will wipe many, many tears and save many, many lives.”
