A groundbreaking study by OutSystems reveals an impending revolution in the software industry, driven by the widespread integration of custom AI agents. The report, “Navigating Agentic AI & Generative AI in Software Development: Human-Agent Collaboration is Here,” found that an overwhelming 93% of software executives are either actively developing or planning to introduce their own custom AI agents. This signifies a profound industry shift towards AI-driven workflows, with nearly half (46%) already deploying agentic AI in applications and workflows, and another 28% in active pilot phases.
The implications are far-reaching. The study highlights significant boosts in developer productivity and improved software quality, with two-thirds of respondents reporting fewer bugs. Moreover, 62% noted enhanced scalability of development efforts, while 60% observed increased efficiency in testing and quality assurance. This AI-powered automation is poised to transform the workforce, as 69% of executives anticipate the emergence of new, specialized roles such as AI oversight, governance, prompt engineering, agent architecture, and orchestration. Furthermore, 63% believe extensive upskilling and reskilling will be essential for existing development teams. While customer service is a top priority for AI agent deployment (49% planning adoption for inquiries), challenges remain. Over 64% of executives voice concerns over governance, security, and compliance risks, alongside issues of AI transparency and reliability. Additionally, 44% identify technical debt and “AI sprawl” as critical risks. The study concludes that AI agents will redefine software development, fostering new human-technology collaborations while necessitating careful management of associated complexities for responsible and effective implementation.
