GenAI to Usher a Paradigm Shift for Pharma

The Indian pharmaceutical industry, often referred to as the “pharmacy of the world,” has gained global recognition for its significant volume-based production. However, despite its immense output, the industry ranks 14th globally in terms of value, indicating a substantial disparity between volume and value.

According to a white paper released at the inaugural of BioAsia 2024, generative AI and data are positioned as transformative tools with the potential to propel India as a top player in value-oriented pharmaceuticals.  Generative AI is cited as a key enabler for predicting bioactivity, toxicity, and physicochemical properties, thus significantly reducing early-stage drug development costs and accelerating the identification of failures.

The current growth rate of 6.2% poses a challenge in achieving the target of reaching $130 billion by 2030, necessitating a shift from reliance on manufacturing simple generics to embracing diversification and value addition. To enhance revenue and competitiveness, the industry needs to focus on biologics, biosimilars, and antibody-drug conjugates, thereby transitioning from volume-based to value-based models.

Potential Impacts

According to the white paper, the incorporation of Generative AI is forecasted to contribute $4-5 billion to the Gross Value Added (GVA) of the Indian pharma sector by 2031. Furthermore, Generative AI is touted to revolutionize the health sciences sector, positively impacting patient care by empowering patients to better manage their conditions and facilitating a more seamless patient-doctor interface.

 Strategic Recommendations

– There is a pressing need for a strategic revamp in research and development, emphasizing the potential for Generative AI to revolutionize drug development timelines and costs.

– Embracing Generative AI and data-driven approaches will position Indian pharmaceuticals as innovators beyond generics, fostering a shift towards value-driven growth.

The convergence of Generative AI and data-driven strategies has the potential to usher in a paradigm shift in the Indian pharmaceutical industry, creating opportunities for enhanced value creation and global competitiveness. Overall, the integration of advanced technologies and a shift towards a value-driven approach stand as crucial steps towards propelling India’s pharmaceutical industry to new heights of innovation and excellence.
