The Elephant Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre at M.R. Palayam in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, are taking extra care of its resident elephants as the summer temperatures soar. To bring down their body temperatures the forest officials are doing their best by making shower bath, mud bath and even swimming pools for the elephants. They are also providing watermelon and others fruits to beat the temperature. With 11 elephants currently under their care, the forest officials are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the well-being of these majestic creatures
According to the source ANI District Forest Officer Krithiga explains that the centre, operational since 2019, provides a safe haven for elephants rescued from private owners lacking proper licenses or failing to maintain adequate care. The elephants receive daily nourishment consisting of grains, vegetables, fruits, and other essential nutrients, overseen by a visiting veterinarian who attends to their medical needs regularly.
To combat the summer heat, the centre has recently installed a mini shower where elephants are bathed, alongside morning swimming pool sessions followed by mud baths. In the evenings, the elephants enjoy a refreshing mini shower under sprinklers. Additionally, they are taken for walks twice a day to ensure exercise and mental stimulation.
Forest veterinary doctor Dr. Kalaivannan further emphasizes the measures taken to keep the elephants cool and hydrated. Alongside increased bathing sessions and water intake, the elephants are offered succulent green fodder and water-rich fruits like watermelon. These efforts are crucial as elephants, with their dark skin, are more susceptible to heat retention and rely on activities like ear-flapping to regulate body temperature.
Overall, the Elephant Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Tiruchirappalli stands as a testament to the dedicated care provided to these gentle giants, ensuring their health and happiness amidst challenging weather conditions.
