NITK Surathkal’s SEARCH
In a unique initiative, Pruthviraj U, an Associate Professor at the Department of Water Resources & Ocean Engineering at NITK Surathkal, has spearheaded the development of the System for Emergency Assistance, Response, and Communication Hub (SEARCH). This innovative system is tailored to provide crucial aid during emergencies and disasters in coastal regions, particularly focusing on Dakshina Kannada.
SEARCH stands as a pioneering achievement on a global scale, distinguishing itself as the world’s first integrated center for rescue, communication, and monitoring. What sets SEARCH apart is its seamless integration of autonomous marine vessels, aerial vehicles, and UHF/VHF/HF HAM radio stations, all within a single hub housed in portable cabins, complete with solar panels. These portable units are nothing short of dynamic command centers, ensuring operational flexibility in diverse and challenging environments.
Notably, SEARCH is equipped with dedicated containers serving different functions, including communication, dry dock for marine vessel maintenance, recharge zone for drones and operators, and a hardware hub housing essential tools and inventory. This multifaceted approach enables SEARCH to extend its applications beyond disaster response.
SEARCH’s scope encompasses vital tasks such as monitoring water and air quality, observing coastal erosion patterns, assessing mangrove health, and supplying crucial coastal data to Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) officials upon request. Moreover, SEARCH goes beyond disaster management and assumes the role of an educational hub. It caters to a diverse audience, including industry professionals, district administrators, academics, students, and HAM/Amateur radio enthusiasts. This expansion of its purpose positions SEARCH not only as a disaster management tool but as a comprehensive resource contributing to environmental monitoring, educational initiatives, and collaborative efforts across various sectors.
Pruthviraj U’s visionary leadership and the development of the SEARCH system represent a significant step forward in enhancing disaster preparedness and environmental monitoring, making it a remarkable achievement that promises a brighter and more resilient future for coastal regions.
