In a significant assessment that underscores the burgeoning demand for artificial intelligence (AI) expertise within India, V. Rajanna, the president of technology services and software at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), has articulated a compelling vision for the future of AI in the nation. Speaking at the annual assembly of the Hyderabad Software Enterprises Association (HYSEA), he highlighted the critical need for India to cultivate a robust talent pool of 10 lakh AI specialists by the year 2026, reflecting the technology industry’s deep investment in this transformative domain.
Hyderabad, renowned for its pioneering efforts in launching digital services for citizens, stands at the forefront of this ambitious endeavour. Rajanna’s keynote address shed light on the global AI market’s dynamic growth trajectory, with projections indicating a 40% increase, culminating in a $42 billion valuation by 2028. This growth is underpinned by strategic initiatives like the national strategy for Artificial Intelligence rolled out by India’s NitiAayog, showcasing the country’s commitment to embracing AI’s potential.
The choice of Hyderabad as a nexus for this AI revolution is no coincidence. The city’s mature ecosystem—encompassing technology, life sciences, academia, industry, and various stakeholders—positions it uniquely to spearhead advancements in AI. Rajanna elaborated on AI’s vast applicability across sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance, emphasizing its capacity to enhance efficiency and reduce average handling times by 40% across different segments.
Further testament to the transformative impact of AI in societal contexts was provided through examples from the Telangana government’s successful deployment of AI in agriculture, showcasing efficiency improvements and enhanced productivity. TCS’s commitment to Telangana and Hyderabad, in particular, underscores the city’s integral role in the company’s growth strategy and its status as TCS’s second-largest global centre.
The significance of AI in catalysing India’s economic growth was echoed by C.P. Gurnani, former CEO and managing director of Tech Mahindra, during his acceptance speech for the Lifetime Achievement Award. Gurnanienvisions AI as a pivotal force in driving India towards a $5 trillion economy, advocating for AI’s integration as an operating system capable of societal transformation.
