Hyderabad – A team of urologists at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, achieved something incredible recently. They successfully removed 418 kidney stones from a 60-year-old patient named Mallesh, who had only 27% kidney function left.

Dealing with such a large number of kidney stones and a kidney function that was severely impaired, the patient needed a special approach. Instead of going for the usual and more invasive method, Dr. K Purna Chandra Reddy, Dr. Gopal R. Tak, and Dr. Dinesh M, along with their team, chose to use a minimally invasive technique called Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL).

With PCNL, small incisions are made through which tiny instruments like a miniature camera and laser probes are inserted into the kidney. This allows surgeons to precisely target and remove the stones without the need for major surgery, which helps the patient recover faster.

The procedure lasted about two hours, during which the surgical team carefully removed each stone, navigating through the complex urinary tract. Advanced imaging technology and modern equipment were crucial in dealing with so many stones while also protecting the patient’s kidney function.

This successful operation not only relieved the patient from a significant health burden but also showcased the expertise and innovation of the medical team at AINU.
