Are Mental Health Issues Among Men and Boys Overlooked?

Recent discussions about gender equality are becoming more popular, but experts say that mental health problems affecting men and boys are often ignored. Benjamin Hine, a psychology professor at the University of West London in the UK, has written a book highlighting this issue.

Hine argues that societal expectations of masculinity make it hard for men to talk about their problems. He explains that issues like body image, fatherhood, and relationships are significant stressors for men and boys. Instead of framing these challenges as problems with men, he suggests we should think of men as having problems that need to be understood and addressed.

The book also discusses other important topics like education, gaming addiction, and homelessness. Hine believes these issues are often overlooked because society tends to view men primarily as the cause of problems rather than as individuals facing their struggles.

He emphasizes the need for a change in perspective to help support men who are struggling. This includes promoting inclusivity and early interventions to improve mental health issues among men and boys. Hine stresses that everyone, regardless of gender or background, has unique challenges and vulnerabilities.

Moreover, he points out that when conversations about gender focus solely on women’s problems, men might feel excluded. This exclusion can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression, driving some men towards negative influences, especially online.

Hine urges public leaders and organizations to consider policies that support the mental well-being of men. He believes that understanding the issues faced by men and boys can help improve overall gender equality. In summary, Hine’s work calls for more awareness and action regarding the mental health issues that affect men and boys.
