AINU doctors showing Successfully Removed Rare Giant Dumbbell-Shaped Testis Tumor

Hyderabad: The Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, recently performed a successful surgery to remove a rare, giant dumbbell-shaped tumor from a young man’s testis. The patient, a 39-year-old from Kadapa, had a kidney transplant last year due to end-stage kidney failure and had been on strong steroids and immunosuppressant’s. He noticed swelling in his left testis, initially thought to be a simple hydrocele, but it quickly grew larger.

At AINU, doctors found a large tumor extending from the left testis into the abdomen, above the belly button. Lab tests showed very high levels of Beta HCG, a marker for testis tumors, at over 20 times the normal value. Fortunately, a PET scan revealed no spread to other parts of the body. Because the patient was on immunosuppressive drugs, traditional treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy were not suitable. Surgery was the only option.

Dr. Rajesh Kumar Reddy Adapala, a consultant uro-oncologist, led the surgery with the support of Dr. Dinesh. The anesthesia team, led by Dr. Nithyananda and Dr. Shifa, provided critical support, ensuring a smooth procedure. Dr. Srikanth offered essential peri-operative nephrology care for the patient’s recovery.

The surgical team made a high incision from the left groin into the abdomen to carefully remove the tumor without spreading it to the lymph nodes. They successfully removed the 40cm tumor without damaging surrounding organs or major blood vessels, and with minimal blood loss.

The patient was moved out of the ICU the day after surgery and discharged on the third day. “Testis tumors are common in young men, but such a large mass growing into the abdomen is rare,” said Dr. Adapala. The patient had previously had a successful kidney transplant at AINU and now has had another successful complex surgery. Dr. Mallikarjuna C, Managing Director, and Dr. PC Reddy, Executive Director, expressed pride in their team’s remarkable achievement.
