It lives, instead, in memory — in the specific, unhurried memory of a moment that announced, without fanfare, that what was about to begin was something more than commerce.

For Potharaju Venkata Satya Prasad, Managing Director of Smart Labtech Private Limited, that moment arrived at an airport in Michigan, USA, sometime in 2008 or 2009 — nearly eighteen years ago now. He had flown in from Hyderabad, carrying a business card, a firm conviction, and the quiet openness of an entrepreneur still building his vision. What he did not carry — because he could not have anticipated it — was any preparation for what he found waiting at the arrivals gate.

Dave Regan was there. David Lee Regan — founder and President of Plas Labs, Michigan’s internationally celebrated laboratory equipment company, a man who had been named Exporter of the Year by the Lansing Chamber of Commerce, who had been interviewed by the Wall Street Journal during the global Ebola outbreak for his expertise in containment science, who had built a one-of-a-kind international enterprise from the ground up through five decades of vision and relentless drive. That Dave Regan.

And beside him, as she always was, stood Sharon.

The couple had driven to the airport themselves. Not a company driver, not a junior executive holding a placard. Dave and Sharon Regan, in person, to receive a budding entrepreneur from a city thousands of miles away — because that was simply who they were. In the days that followed, they hosted Satya Prasad, bearing every expense of his stay with a generosity that made no distinction between the established titan and the young visionary still finding his footing. When the visit ended, they drove him back to the airport and saw him off — as one sees off not a business contact but a member of the family one is reluctant to release back to the world.

Satya Prasad has never forgotten it. He speaks of it still, with the particular warmth that accumulates only around memories one returns to again and again because they contain something irreducible — a truth about people that no subsequent experience has managed to diminish. In that gesture of unhurried, unself-conscious hospitality, he understood what Plas Labs was before it was anything else. Not a corporation. A family. A family that happened, along the way, to build some of the finest controlled atmosphere enclosures in the history of laboratory science.

Dave Regan was born on March 12, 1938, in a world that had not yet imagined the molecular biology revolution his instruments would one day serve. He graduated from Waukegan Township High School in Illinois in 1956, earned his BS and MBA in International Trade from Michigan State University in 1962, and met Sharon — his great love, his collaborator in everything, the woman who would be beside him for the next six decades — as the residence hall manager at MSU. They married in 1963.

He founded Plas Labs in Lansing, Michigan, and built it over fifty-seven years into a global authority in acrylic isolation technology: glove boxes and controlled atmosphere chambers that found their way into research laboratories across every continent, into pharmaceutical companies and government institutes and university departments and strategic research establishments, wherever the boundary between the scientist and the sample needed to be maintained with absolute, uncompromising precision.

He was, by every account, a man of infectious energy — his signature “Yeah Buddy!” reportedly capable of lifting the temperature of any room he entered. He wore Plus-4 knickers on the golf course in deliberate homage to a more elegant sporting era, shot a hole-in-one at Walnut Hills Country Club on April 2, 1994, and cherished his cigars, his model railroading, his Theta Chi fraternity, and above all his three sons — Robert, Michael, and Patrick — with the same wholehearted devotion he brought to every dimension of his life.

His wife Sharon preceded him in death on June 11, 2024.

Seventy-five days later, on August 24, 2024, Dave Regan followed her. He was 86 years old. The official cause of death was laryngeal cancer. But as his family wrote, with a plainness that breaks the heart precisely because it does not try to be poetic: the true cause of death was a broken heart. When mom passed, his will to live left with her.

They had been married for almost 62 years.

Patrick, in particular, has continued the personal warmth that defined his parents’ relationship with Satya Prasad: he shares photographs of his family and Satya Prasad shares his own family in return. These are not the exchanges of a principal and a distributor. They are the exchanges of two families — one from Lansing, one from Hyderabad — who recognised in each other the same essential values and decided, without contracts requiring it, to be kin.

That is the foundation on which the Smart Labtech and Plas Labs partnership stands. And it is a foundation that Dave Regan built — with his own hands, his own vision, and his wife beside him — over the course of a lifetime that the laboratory world is richer for having contained.
