This condition, experienced by many individuals who have recovered from the initial infection, is characterized by a array of symptoms that persist long after the virus has cleared from the body. A groundbreaking study published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE sheds light on these cognitive challenges, revealing that both Long Covid patients and those suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) exhibit swelling in the hippocampus—an area of the brain crucial for memory formation and cognitive function. Researchers from Griffith University in Australia utilized advanced ultra-high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to conduct a comparative analysis among various groups: 17 Long Covid patients, 29 CFS patients, and a control group of 15 healthy individuals.
The findings were striking. The research indicated that individuals with Long Covid and CFS had a significantly larger volume in their hippocampus compared to healthy volunteers. This enlargement may be attributed to either neurogenesis—the creation of new neurons in response to stress or injury—or possible viral effects on the brain.

The study illuminated the correlation between the size of the hippocampus and the severity of symptoms experienced by patients. Those with a larger hippocampus reported more profound impairments in concentration, encountering difficulties with sleep, increased pain sensitivity, and persistent fatigue.
