“Unless you understand the connection between the science and the society, you will never be a transformative leader,” Dr. Sreedhara Panicker Somanath, Chairman of ISRO said. In an enlightening address at the 12th Convocation Ceremony of JNTU Hyderabad, he discussed the significant impact of space technology on societal development. His speech provided a comprehensive overview of how advancements in space science extend far beyond exploration, playing a crucial role in various aspects of daily life and societal advancement.
Dr. Somanath began by elucidating the transformative role that satellites and space missions play in modern society. He brought attention to their applications in critical areas such as agriculture, where satellite data is used for crop monitoring, soil health assessment, and effective planning of agricultural practices. This, he noted, has immensely aided in enhancing food security and agricultural productivity.
Delving into climate monitoring and environmental protection, Dr. Somanath highlighted how space technology is pivotal in observing and understanding Earth’s climate systems.
“You should understand the economic crisis, the terrorism, the climate change related issues, the source constraints that we are facing in this global world,” he said.
He pointed out that data gathered from satellites contribute significantly to weather forecasting, climate change studies, and monitoring of natural phenomena like hurricanes and forest fires, thereby aiding in disaster preparedness and management.
Moreover, Dr. Somanath touched upon the role of space technology in disaster management. He explained how satellite imagery and communication are indispensable tools in emergency response, providing real-time information that is crucial for rescue and relief operations during natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, and tsunamis.
He also emphasized the societal benefits of space technology in terms of connectivity and communication. He illustrated how satellite communication has revolutionized telecommunication, bringing remote areas into the global conversation and facilitating essential services such as telemedicine and distance education. He successfully conveyed that space technology is an integral part of our daily lives, contributing significantly to societal advancement and the betterment of humanity.
