What are some of the innovative strategies being explored to improve the effectiveness of antibiotics and reduce the likelihood of AMR?
Adjuvant therapies can include immunomodulators or compounds that enhance the immune system’s response against infections are being explored to improve the effectiveness of antibiotics and reduce the likelihood of antibiotic resistance. Furthermore, efforts to maintain a healthy gut microbiome are gaining attention. Strategies like prebiotics, probiotics, and dietary interventions aim to support a balanced and diverse gut microbial community.
In the quest for novel antimicrobial compounds, what cutting-edge approaches are researchers employing to unlock the genetic potential of uncultivable microorganisms? How do these methods contribute to discovering new chemical scaffolds and antibiotics?
Researchers are exploring innovative approaches like membrane diffusion-based cultivation, cell sorting-based cultivation, and microfluidics-based cultivation, to access the untapped potential of uncultivable microorganisms. Metagenomics is the preliminary approach which provides the possibility to circumvent the problem of cultivability. These methods help identify biosynthetic gene clusters responsible for producing bioactive compounds, including potential antibiotics. By employing these cutting-edge approaches, researchers aim to unlock the vast reservoir of genetic potential present in uncultivable microorganisms, which could lead to the discovery of new chemical scaffolds and antibiotics.
