Amity’s Rootonic is a Game changer
The researchers at Amity Institute of Microbial Technology, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, have introduced Rootonic, a patented biofertilizer based on Piriformospora indica. This revolutionary biofertilizer has ushered in a transformation in the agricultural industry, offering a sustainable and eco-friendly approach to farming.
Piriformospora indica, an axenically cultivated fungus, establishes a symbiotic relationship with plant roots, leading to remarkable improvements in crop production. The application of P. indica has been shown to increase crop biomass and yield by an impressive 15-40%, while simultaneously reducing the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides by 25-50%.
One of the key advantages of P. indica biofertilizer is its compatibility with conventional agriculture practices, including the use of chemically coated seeds and co-application with chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This versatility makes it a seamless fit for existing farming methods.
The technology behind Rootonic has already been successfully transferred to five companies, including one in Taiwan. It involves the mass production of P. indica spores and mycelium in fermenters, followed by formulation and application to seeds, seedlings, standing crops, soil, and even drip/flood irrigation systems. This approach establishes a beneficial symbiotic relationship between P. indica and plant roots, enhancing nutrient uptake and overall plant health.
Furthermore, the technology has been effectively upscaled for large-scale production in 600-1000 liters fermenters through collaboration with industry partners.
Rootonic represents a paradigm shift in agriculture, offering an environmentally friendly and sustainable solution to boost crop productivity while reducing the reliance on harmful chemicals. Its potential to revolutionize farming practices aligns with global efforts to promote sustainable and eco-conscious agriculture.
