Three optical measurement techniques that quality-control labs in food, pharmaceutical, chemical and beverage manufacturing rely on daily — refractive index, optical rotation, and density — sit together in Schmidt + Haensch’s section of Smart Labtech’s booth, a German instrumentation line whose accuracy figures reward a closer look than a passing glance at the display case.
On refractometry, the ATR V/VT offers an intuitive touchscreen interface with a measuring range up to 1.27000–1.71000 refractive index units, or equivalently 0 to 100 Brix, at an accuracy of up to ±0.00002 RI and resolution to 0.00001 RI — precision fine enough to separate closely related formulation batches. The VariRef², built as a modular platform with 21 CFR Part 11 compliance, extends the range to 1.72000 RI and pushes resolution further still, to 0.000001 RI, positioning it for regulated environments where both the measurement and its audit trail carry equal weight. The ATR P trades some of that range for throughput, built as a robust instrument for high sample volumes across 1.32000–1.54000 RI, while the ATR L takes the opposite approach — a multi-wavelength scanning refractometer purpose-built for dispersion measurements across a 350–960 nm wavelength range, a specialist tool for labs characterizing optical materials rather than running routine QC checks.
The polarimeter range covers four instruments built around slightly different measurement philosophies. The UniPol V is a circular polarimeter measuring to ±89.9° with accuracy of ±0.003°, available in single- or dual-wavelength configurations. The VariPol, again built with 21 CFR Part 11 compliance for regulated labs, matches that accuracy across a similarly modular platform with multiple wavelength options. The Polartronic® V adds continuous measurement mode and a wider effective range up to 259 °Z with tighter accuracy of ±0.002°, useful for process monitoring rather than single-point testing. And the Saccharomat® V, described as maintenance-free thanks to its quartz-wedge design, is purpose-built for sugar analysis — a specialist instrument for an industry where polarimetric sugar determination remains a standard method decades after its introduction.
Density measurement is covered by the VariDens, another 21 CFR Part 11-compliant modular instrument, measuring from 0 to 3 g/cm³ at an accuracy of up to ±0.00005 g/cm³, with internal Peltier temperature control spanning 10°C to 95°C to keep density readings — which are inherently temperature-sensitive — stable across a working shift.
For labs currently running refractive index, optical rotation and density measurements on ageing or separately sourced instruments, the case Schmidt + Haensch makes at the booth is less about any single spec and more about the option to standardize three adjacent optical techniques, their calibration schedules, and their compliance documentation, under one vendor relationship.
Schmidt + Haensch’s refractometry, polarimetry and density instruments will be on display at Smart Labtech’s booth, Hall-1 C-01, HITEX Hyderabad, September 10–12.
