A new study conducted by researchers at Harvard University suggests that people who eat a lot of ultra-processed foods might be at higher risk of stroke and dementia. These foods include things like fast food, sugary drinks, cakes, and snacks.
The study, which lasted for 11 years and involved over 30,000 adults aged 45 and older, found that those who ate the most processed foods were more likely to report memory issues. They were also more likely to experience serious health problems like stroke and cognitive impairment, which is an early sign of dementia.
Researchers believe that the harmful effects of these foods come from how they’re made, not just because they’re high in calories. Additives in processed foods can mess with our gut bacteria and cause inflammation, which can lead to chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes.
During the study, participants filled out questionnaires about their diet habits and were split into groups based on how much processed food they ate. By the end of the study, over 1,000 people had suffered a stroke, and nearly 800 had signs of cognitive impairment.
Dr. William Taylor Kimberly, the lead author of the study, explained that eating too much processed food can increase the risk of stroke and cognitive issues. He stressed the importance of more research to understand exactly which parts of processed foods are causing these problems.
Overall, this study adds to the growing evidence that eating too much junk food can harm our health in many ways. It’s a reminder to choose healthier options whenever possible to keep our bodies and brains in good shape.
