New Study Finds Tiny Plastic Bits in Blood Clots, Raising Health Concerns | Neo Science Hub

A new study conducted by scientists in China has uncovered something surprising: tiny pieces of plastic in blood clots removed from patients with heart attacks, strokes, and vein problems.

The study, published in the journal eBioMedicine, involved thirty patients with various health issues. These patients, who were around 65 years old on average, had surgery to remove blood clots from their arteries or veins. Researchers found microplastics – minuscule bits of plastic – in most of these blood clots.

These microplastics came in different shapes and sizes, and they were made of materials commonly found in everyday items like bottles, bags, and construction materials. The most common types were polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE).

The scientists think that these microplastics might be making blood clotting worse, but more research is needed to confirm this. They found that patients with more microplastics in their blood clots also had higher levels of a substance called D-dimer, which is linked to blood clotting.

The researchers say that this discovery raises concerns about how plastic pollution might be affecting our health. They call for more research to understand where these microplastics are coming from and how they might be impacting our bodies.

So, while this study is just the beginning, it highlights the importance of paying attention to the tiny particles around us – even ones we can’t see – and how they might be affecting our health.
