A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Texas and Baylor University has found no evidence supporting the idea that technology use, such as smartphones and computers, leads to “digital dementia” in older adults. Instead, the research suggests that using technology may actually lower the risk of cognitive decline in people over the age of 50.
The term “digital dementia” was popularized by German neuroscientist Manfred Spitzer in 2012. It refers to the concern that increased reliance on technology can weaken our thinking abilities. Critics of technology often cite three main worries: too much passive screen time, reliance on devices for memory tasks (like storing phone numbers), and a decreased ability to concentrate.
However, in this extensive study, researchers analyzed data from over 411,000 adults aged 50 and above. The meta-analysis included 57 previous studies that measured cognitive decline through tests and dementia diagnoses. The findings indicated that greater usage of technology was associated with a significant reduction in cognitive decline risk. Specifically, participants who engaged more with technology had a 58% lower risk of experiencing cognitive decline, according to the study’s odds ratio of 0.42.
These results are particularly noteworthy as they regard technology’s impact on aging brains, an area that has not been thoroughly examined until now. Contrastingly, known protective factors against cognitive decline, like physical activity and managing blood pressure, show lower protective rates of approximately 35% and 13%, respectively, in previous research.
Researchers Jared Benge and Michael Scullin noted that while the benefits of technology use on brain function seem promising, more studies are essential to understand how different factors may contribute to these findings and to explore whether similar results can be replicated across different populations, especially in low and middle-income countries.
The study emphasizes the importance of not only using technology but engaging with it in ways that stimulate the brain. Activities that promote cognitive engagement, such as reading, learning a new language, or using new applications, may contribute to better memory and thought processes as we age.
Despite concerns about technology use, this study paints a more positive picture, suggesting that technology could support social connections and help older adults remain independent. As the digital landscape evolves, understanding how we use technology will become increasingly critical for maintaining cognitive health.
Research in this field is still ongoing, and future studies are expected to shed light on the relationship between technology and brain function, paving the way for healthier aging in the digital age.
