On March 20, 2025, Eli Lilly, the U.S.-based pharmaceutical company, officially launched Mounjaro (tirzepatide) in India, presenting a new opportunity for those battling type 2 diabetes and obesity. While many healthcare professionals have welcomed the introduction of Mounjaro, they emphasize the necessity for caution. Dr. Ambrish Mithal, Chairman and Head of Endocrinology & Diabetes at Max Healthcare, acknowledged the potential benefits but cautioned that the drug should only be taken under medical supervision. “These drugs are not for casual or cosmetic weight loss; inappropriate use could lead to serious health complications,” he stated.
Dr. Ashutosh Goyal, a Senior Consultant Endocrinologist, echoed this sentiment and described Mounjaro’s availability as a significant step forward in diabetes and obesity management. He stressed the importance of incorporating this medication into comprehensive treatment plans that include lifestyle changes and regular medical check-ups to ensure safety and efficacy.
Public Health Concerns and Criticism
The launch has not escaped criticism. Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora highlighted the paradox of the situation, stating that while the U.S. has flooded India with unhealthy sugary products contributing to obesity rates, they are now presenting weight-loss drugs as solutions. Deora advocates for stricter regulations against sugary drinks, including increased taxes and bans on advertising aimed at children.
Mounjaro’s introduction into the Indian market holds promise for addressing the intertwined issues of diabetes and obesity. However, as experts warn, the success of this medication will depend on responsible prescribing practices and comprehensive patient management. A combined approach involving medication, lifestyle changes, and continuous monitoring will be critical for optimizing health outcomes for those living with these conditions.
As Mounjaro begins to make its mark, the focus must remain on ensuring it is used safely and effectively, allowing it to serve as an important tool in the battle against diabetes and obesity in India.
