Eli Lilly's Mounjaro Launches in India: A Game Changer for Diabetes and Obesity Care | Neo Science Hub

In a significant leap forward for India’s healthcare sector, Eli Lilly and Company has officially launched its highly anticipated drug, Mounjaro (tirzepatide), in India on March 20, 2025. This follows the approval of the drug by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). This launch marks a crucial advancement in addressing the growing challenges of obesity and Type 2 diabetes in the country, as highlighted in the previous article published on March 17th, which discussed Eli Lilly’s plans to introduce Tirzepatide.

Mounjaro: A Dual-Action Solution

Mounjaro is engineered to treat both obesity and Type 2 diabetes by targeting dual hormonal pathways, specifically activating the GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) hormone receptors. Clinical trials have demonstrated its effectiveness, with participants experiencing significant weight loss. Patients on the highest dosage (15 mg) achieved an average weight loss of 21.8 kg, while those on the minimum dosage (5 mg) experienced a 15.4 kg reduction over 72 weeks, when combined with diet and exercise.

Pricing and Accessibility

Eli Lilly has strategically priced Mounjaro to enhance accessibility in the Indian market. The drug is priced at ₹3,500 for a 2.5 mg vial and ₹4,375 for a 5 mg vial. Given its once-weekly administration, the monthly cost will range from ₹14,000 to ₹17,500. This pricing is notably lower than in the U.S., where it typically costs between $1,000 and $1,200 (approximately ₹86,000 to ₹1 lakh). This competitive pricing strategy aligns with Eli Lilly’s commitment to providing effective solutions at a reasonable cost, as discussed in the previous article.

Market Growth and Demand

India’s anti-obesity drug market is experiencing substantial growth, having expanded from ₹137 crore in November 2020 to an estimated ₹535 crore by November 2024. This growth is fueled by the rising prevalence of obesity and diabetes, with approximately 101 million individuals in India currently diagnosed with diabetes. A significant portion of these patients, about half, are not adequately managed, underscoring the critical need for effective treatment options. The launch of Mounjaro is timely, as demand for GLP-1 receptor agonists, the drug class Mounjaro belongs to, has surged. The impending expiration of the semaglutide patent is also expected to further stimulate market competition and growth.

Collaboration and Public Health Commitment

Eli Lilly is not only focused on providing medication but also aims to collaborate with governmental and healthcare organizations to increase public awareness and improve management strategies for obesity and diabetes. Winselow Tucker, president and general manager of Lilly India, stated, “The dual burden of obesity and Type 2 diabetes presents a major public health challenge in India, and we are committed to pushing for better treatment options and awareness campaigns”. This collaborative approach underscores the company’s dedication to addressing these health issues comprehensively, as emphasized in the earlier report.

The launch of Mounjaro in India is a pivotal development in the ongoing battle against obesity and Type 2 diabetes. With its innovative dual-action mechanism, promising clinical results, and competitive pricing, Mounjaro is poised to play a transformative role in managing these widespread health challenges.
