In a significant step towards supporting children affected by HIV/AIDS, the Health Department of Tamil Nadu launched a new scheme providing a monthly financial assistance of ₹1,000 to 7,618 beneficiaries. This initiative aims to address the educational, medical, and nutritional needs of these children, marking a crucial development in public health policy.
The launch event, held to commemorate World Blood Donors Day, was presided over by Health Minister Ma. Subramanian. He emphasized the importance of this scheme as part of the budgetary announcements aimed at uplifting the lives of those impacted by HIV/AIDS, particularly children under 18 years of age.
Historically, Tamil Nadu has invested in the well-being of children affected by HIV/AIDS. The scheme builds upon efforts initiated during the 2009-2010 tenure of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, who established a trust fund with a corpus of ₹5 crore. This fund has been instrumental in providing annual financial assistance for children’s education, medical care, and nutritional support.
The current initiative will not only provide direct financial aid but also includes the establishment of 11 Red Ribbon Clubs across colleges in the state. These clubs are intended to foster awareness about HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections among young adults. In addition to this, significant outreach efforts are planned for school students in classes VIII, IX, and XI, covering a network of 9,830 schools across Tamil Nadu. This will include life skills training, which has already been initiated in 11 selected schools.
The launch of this scheme reflects a broader commitment by the government to combat the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS and support those who are directly affected. It aims to ensure that children living with and affected by HIV/AIDS receive the necessary support to thrive, thereby fostering a healthier community and a more educated youth.
As the initiative gains traction, it is expected to contribute to reducing social stigma and promote a more inclusive society, ensuring that all children have the opportunity to succeed regardless of their background or health status. This launch represents not just financial support, but a renewed hope for a better future for thousands of children across Tamil Nadu.
