Strong tremors shook Kolkata and other areas of West Bengal on November 21, 2025, around 10:10 a.m. The earthquake, measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, originated in Bangladesh at a depth of 10 kilometers. While the epicenter was located near Narsingdi, about 40 kilometers from Dhaka, residents of West Bengal experienced noticeable jolts.
Videos showing items like furniture and ceiling fans shaking quickly spread on social media. Many people evacuated offices in a panic, and others took to the streets. One worker in south Kolkata recalled, “I jolted out of my chair when it started shaking. It felt dizzying until I realized everything was moving.”
Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or significant damage. Residents in cities such as Agartala and Guwahati also reported similar tremors.
In the political sphere, parties reacted sharply on social media. The BJP quipped, “West Bengal just felt earthquake tremors. @MamataOfficial, was it because of SIR?” The Trinamool Congress responded, implying the tremors were a signal of impending defeat for the BJP in upcoming elections.
For detailed official data, the earthquake was confirmed by the National Center for Seismology and the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
This earthquake served both as a natural occurrence and a political backdrop, with discussions buzzing in both public and social circles.
