Gaganyaan Cryogenic Engine

The performance of the primary cryogenic engine that will be installed on the LVM3 launch vehicles for India’s Gaganyaan missions has been validated and approved for use on human spaceflight missions, according to a statement released by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Wednesday.

India’s first planned human flight project, called Gaganyaan, aims to return a three-person crew to Earth after three days in a 400-kilometer orbit. It is planned for mid-2024 to be the first unmanned Gaganyaan-1 mission.

The space agency’s High Altitude Test Facility in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu, conducted the seventh vacuum test in a series on the CE20 cryogenic engine, which powers the spacecraft during the cryogenic stage of its lift-off, on February 14.

In contrast to the minimal specified period for human rating of 6,350 seconds (1 hour 45 minutes), the CE20 was previously put through 39 hot fire tests under various operating circumstances, lasting 8,810 seconds (2 hours 26 minutes).

Even the flight engine, which was designated for the inaugural Gaganyaan mission, has finished the acceptance testing, according to ISRO. The flight engine, which powers the higher stages of the LVM3, has an impulse of 442.5 seconds and a thrust capacity of 19-22 tonnes.

One of the many experiments and technological development initiatives needed for the anticipated human-space flight mission is the creation of a human-rate launch vehicle. Additional technical advancements are anticipated, including the creation of life support systems to give astronauts a space environment similar to Earth, the provision of emergency escape routes for crew members, and the evolution of crew management practices for crew training, recuperation, and rehabilitation. Precursor missions are also being planned to show the state of technological readiness before to the manned Gaganyaan expedition.
