Delhi Metro Achieves Historic Milestone with Driverless Operations
Delhi Metro has successfully achieved a remarkable milestone by implementing India’s first fully automated driverless metro system on the Magenta Line, marking the country’s entry into the elite group of nations operating such advanced transportation technology. The 37-kilometer Magenta Line, running from Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden, now operates with complete Grade of Automation (GoA) Level 4, eliminating the possibility of human error and positioning Delhi Metro among the world’s largest driverless networks.
This technological advancement represents a significant leap in urban mobility infrastructure, with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) joining only 7% of global metro networks that offer fully automated operations. The transformation was implemented through a carefully phased approach beginning in May 2024, progressing through multiple stages including removal of cab partition doors, gradual elimination of driving consoles, and systematic reduction of train operator presence. The final stage was completed in May 2025, establishing Delhi Metro’s 97-kilometer driverless network as one of the world’s most extensive automated systems.
The Pink Line is currently undergoing similar automation processes, expected to achieve full driverless operations within three to four months. Additionally, all three priority corridors of DMRC’s Phase-IV expansion will feature driverless operations, further expanding India’s automated metro infrastructure. This achievement demonstrates India’s commitment to cutting-edge public transportation technology and positions the nation as a global leader in metro automation systems.
