Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance Proposes Zero Import Duty on US Drugs | Neo Science Hub

In a significant call to action aimed at bolstering the local pharmaceutical industry, the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA) has proposed to the Indian government the reduction of import duty on pharmaceutical products from the United States to zero. This initiative comes in light of the current 10% tariff imposed on US drugs, which the IPA argues is hindering the competitive capacity of the domestic market.

Background

The IPA, which includes major Indian drug manufacturers such as Cipla, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, and Lupin, has been actively advocating for changes that would enhance the viability of Indian pharmaceuticals on both national and international stages. The current tariff on US drugs stands in contrast to the United States’ policy of not imposing any import duties on Indian-made pharmaceuticals, creating an uneven playing field.

Implications for the Indian Pharma Industry

Sudarshan Jain, the general secretary of IPA, emphasized the need for this policy shift during discussions with representatives from the Ministry of Commerce. The IPA asserts that removing the import duty would significantly reduce costs for high-priced drugs, including essential cancer medicines, thus making treatments more accessible to Indian patients.

The import volume from the US is marked at approximately $800 million annually, a figure that highlights the economic stakes involved. IPA representatives believe that lowering duties could facilitate greater importation of high-quality pharmaceutical products, benefiting both consumers and manufacturers.

Recent Developments

In the latest budget, certain duties on cancer medications were already eliminated. The IPA has urged the government to extend this initiative to cover all remaining pharmaceutical products from the US. This move is seen as crucial for fostering innovation and ensuring the sustainability of the Indian pharma sector, especially as global competition intensifies.

The proposal by the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance to eliminate import duties on US pharmaceuticals reflects a strategic approach to enhance competition and supply chain efficiency within the Indian market. By aligning trade policies to support local industry, India could position itself as a more formidable player globally, promoting not only patient access to medications but also fostering economic growth in the pharmaceutical sector.
