BEML Establishes State-of-the-Art Coach Production Facility in Madhya Pradesh
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for an innovative ₹1,800 crore railway coach manufacturing unit in Madhya Pradesh’s Raisen district, establishing a world-class facility designed to produce coaches for Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and metro trains under Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML). The 148-acre facility in Umaria village will generate employment for approximately 5,000 people through direct and indirect opportunities, marking a significant milestone for indigenous rail manufacturing capabilities.
The state-of-the-art plant, named BRAHMA (BEML Rail Hub for Manufacturing), will initially produce 125-200 coaches annually with planned scale-up to over 1,000 coaches within five years. The facility strategically positions India to support Indian Railways’ ambitious deployment of 500 new Vande Bharat trains by 2030 while meeting growing metro coach demand in tier-2 cities. Advanced manufacturing technologies including robotic welding, lean manufacturing processes, and solar-powered energy systems will ensure global competitiveness.
The project aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Make in India’ vision, establishing Madhya Pradesh as a crucial hub for railway manufacturing while reducing reliance on imported rolling stock. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav emphasized the facility’s catalytic effect on regional economic development, spurring growth of ancillary industries including suppliers of bogies, interiors, and air-conditioning systems across Raisen and Bhopal districts. BEML’s expansion into railway coach manufacturing represents strategic convergence of defense-grade precision engineering with civilian infrastructure needs, complementing existing manufacturing hubs in Bengaluru, Palakkad, and Kolar Gold Fields while enhancing India’s rail export potential.
